This is Abby’s second year as a Camp Akalaka Director. Abby is a full time employee of Cornell Cooperative Extension as the After School Program Coordinator. She is the director of the after school programs at Brushton Moira Central School, Chateaugay Central School, and Tupper Lake Central School during the school year and acts as a Camp Akalaka Director when school is not in session. Abby began working at Cornell Cooperative extension of Franklin County in March of 2014 as an Intern. She holds a B.S in Community Health from SUNY Potsdam. Abby loves being active, playing sports, outdoor recreation including snowboarding, hiking, ice fishing and all BBQ lawn games. Abby is passionate about helping pave the road to success for youth in her community.
This is Stephanie’s first year as a Camp Akalaka Director. She has been with the Malone YMCA since October, 2014. She first joined the YMCA as the Director of Afterschool Activities: Middle School. In September, 2015, Stephanie took on the role of Y’s Time Director, and was promoted to the position of Assistant Director in February, 2016. Stephanie loves her job at the YMCA and with Camp Akalaka as she is able to use her creative talents and wild side to help make Camp Akalaka a fun and exciting time for all our campers. She enjoys helping kids discover their abilities, building up their self-esteem, and helping them learn how to live healthy lives.
This is Dan’s fifth year as a Camp Akalaka Counselor. Dan is a full time employee of Cornell Cooperative Extension as the Tribal Mentoring Site Coordinator and Nutrition Educator. Dan began working for Cornell Cooperative Extension as an intern for Camp Akalaka in 2013, doing nutrition education and leading group activities. In Dan’s spare time, you can find him outdoors all year round, playing various sports or hiking/snowboarding on the mountains. Dan is excited for another year of camp and hopes the campers can keep up with him!
Madeleine is a second year counselor at Camp Akalaka. She is a sophomore at Middlebury College majoring in Neuroscience. She loves to bake cakes and run in obstacle races. She was the Pokemon Go connoisseur for the 2016 season. She is very excited to return to camp for the 2017 season and can’t wait to see campers old and new!
This is Rebecca’s second year at Camp Akalaka. She is a graduate of Chateaugay Central School and plans on going to North Country for Nursing in August. Her favorite activities are spending days on the lake, playing soccer and spending time with her friends and family. Rebecca loves working with youth and says there are so many teaching opportunities! She loves to teach new things and see campers have fun with learning.
This is Jayne’s second year at Camp Akalaka. Jayne is the Aquatics director for camp and loves every minute of it! Her favorite place to be with campers is in the pool teaching them very important life skills. She enjoys teaching swim lessons to all ages and snuggling with her cat. Also during her free time Jayne assists a local bird rescue program giving educational presentations and helping nurse them back to health. During the school year Jayne works for Y’s time. Jayne hopes to help empower her campers this year by improving their swimming skills.
Assistant Aquatics Director
This is Jamie’s first year at Camp Akalaka. He has been a camp counselor for 3 years at Camp Jericho in Plattsburgh, NY. He enjoys being a positive role model to youth and helping them learn and have fun during the summer. Jamie absolutely loves sports and is a three sport athlete at Chateaugay central, which he has recently become a graduate of. Jamie plans on attending North Country in the fall to play soccer and study Criminal Justice.
This is Caitlynn’s first year as a camp counselor. She is a graduate of Chateaugay central school and loves to be active. She has worked with children for a majority of her life and loves planning new and fun activities. Caitlynn plans to attend North Country College for nursing in the fall because she is passionate about helping people in any way that she can.
This is Alissa’s first year as a Camp Akalaka counselor. During the school year she works at the YMCA after school program, Y’s time at Flanders Elementary. Alissa is always full of energy and loves to keep youth active and learning. Alissa likes to go fishing and spending time with friends and family. She is always preparing for fun and exciting things for youth to do and can’t wait for the 2017 camp season!
This is Austins first year with Camp Akalaka. Austin is currently a student at SUNY Canton where he studies sports management and plays on the men’s soccer and baseball teams. When home from school, he works for the Malone central School District as a substitute teacher. Austin comes to Camp Akalaka after a life of building experiences with the youth within the community. With a fun and games type of attitude, he enjoys remaining a kid at heart.
